Proxmox vs Synology VMM: when the NAS runs out of breath
Virtual Machine Manager makes the first VM on a Synology feel free; the third VM makes the NAS feel small. Proxmox is the natural step up, and losing the DSM-grade comfort is the fear that delays that step. Atlas removes the fear.
What the two worlds do differently
Synology VMM is genuinely convenient: it lives inside DSM, needs no extra hardware, and its UI keeps things reassuring. It is also bounded: consumer CPUs, limited RAM, per-node licensing for some features, and a hypervisor that is a guest inside a NAS operating system.
Proxmox is the opposite trade: purpose-built virtualization with KVM and LXC, ZFS, snapshots, clustering, PCIe passthrough, on hardware of choice. The trade is the interface: DSM's warmth is replaced by an admin panel and, at the edges, a shell.
People rarely leave Synology because they stopped liking it; they leave because the workloads grew. The question is whether stepping up must mean giving up comfort. It does not.
